RESUMO

The suitability of CT and 3D scanners for craniometric proposes was tested using digital calipers when determining linear measurements, and a measuring cylinder was used for the accuracy of 3D printing of deer antlers obtained by the CT and 3D scanners. The resolution of digitized objects from a 3D scanner ranged from 0.008 mm to 0.122 mm. For mandibular dimensions, a positive deviation (p < 0.01) from the primary control measurement was recorded. The average antler volume measured with the cylinder was 60.47 cm3 at the first measurement, in the case of the CT scanner 61.62 cm3 and for the 3D scanner 64.76 cm3both technologies exhibit a positive deviation from the primary measurement. Precise sensing and measurements can be used to evaluate the quality and evolution of wildlife populations, create digital museum collections, or to examine in detail certain traits such as antler and horn development or dentition.

RESUMO

Here, we report on the exceptionally well-preserved deer record from the locality of Pantalla (central Italy), dated in the Early Pleistocene (ca. 2.1-2.0 million years ago). The fossils show a combination of characters that allows an unambiguous attribution to 'Pseudodama' nestii, of which they represent one of the most informative collections to date. Our comparisons-also conducted through CT-based methods on endocranial structures-reveal that the cranial and postcranial skeleton of 'P.' nestii displays a mosaic of intermediate characters between extant Dama and Cervus, but also that the affinities with Dama are prevalent. Some Cervus-like features especially in cranial morphology, can be interpreted as plesiomorphic characters supporting a basal position of 'Pseudodama' among the Cervini. Interestingly, three bone anomalies are described in the two male crania of 'P.' nestii from Pantalla and are interpreted as palaeotraumatological evidence resulting from different injuries suffered by the deer during their life. This allows opening a treasure trove of information on paleobiological aspects, including ontogeny and antler cycle and function.

RESUMO

PROBLEM: The humoral immune response to phospholipids was investigated in women with reproductive failure [1073 women after one in vitro fertilization (IVF), 853 women after two and more IVF, 627 women after three and more repeated spontaneous miscarriages or missed abortions, 412 women after diagnostic laparoscopy] and compared with that of 391 healthy fertile women. METHOD OF STUDY: Sera from all women in the study were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of IgG, IgA, and IgM isotypes of antibodies against seven phospholipids (aPLs), i.e. cardiolipin, L-phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylacid as well as against beta2-glycoprotein I. RESULTS: Patients after two and more IVF (48 and 50%, respectively), patients with three and more repeated spontaneous miscarriages (50 and 46.5%, respectively) are associated with significantly higher serum levels of aPLs against inositol, and L-serine (P < 0.01). A quarter of them were positive for three and more aPLs. CONCLUSION: It seems that determination of aPLs only against cardiolipin in reproductive failure is not sufficient for obstetric-gynecology diagnosis as the primary anti-phospholipid syndrome. Our long-ranging study (from 1998 to 2003) shows the necessity to test for a complete aPLs profile. Sera from patients after two and more IVF procedures, and sera from women after three and more repeated abortions are immunologically more active than sera from women after one unsuccessful IVF and sera from women after diagnostic laparoscopy. This important result is very significant for future treatment.

RESUMO

PROBLEM: Endometriosis is suggested to represent an autoimmune disorder, but what is the prevalence of autoantibodies to antigens relevant to reproduction? METHOD OF STUDY: The humoral immune response to the women with endometriosis (stage I-II: 261 women; stage III-IV: 62 women) in serum and in peritoneal fluid was investigated compared with 101 healthy women. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used in all the women for the detection of seven antiphospholipid antibodies [antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) against cardiolipin, L-phosphatidyl (ph)-serine, ph-glycerol, ph-inositol, ph-ethanolamine, phosphatidic (ph)-acid and against beta2-glycoprotein I] of class IgG, IgA, and IgM. A passive haemmagglutination method and ELISA (BioGen) was used for assessment of antizona pellucida antibodies (aZP), tray agglutination test (TAT) and indirect mixed anti-imunoglobulin reaction test (MAR-test) for the determination of sperm antibody levels. RESULTS: Endometriosis I-II were associated with higher serum and peritoneal fluid levels of aPLs against inositol, cardiolipin, ethanolamine, and beta2-glycoprotein I. Forty percent of patients were positive for aZPA. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with lesions of endometriosis stage I-II had more autoantibodies than those with stage III-IV, and may be immunologically more active. This result may be significant for future treatments such as in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer.
